Some Kind of Wonderful by Giovanna Fletcher

Why 'Some Kind of Wonderful' by Giovanna Fletcher Is a Heartwarming Read About Moving On

Welcome, book lovers and seekers of feel-good fiction!

Today, I’m sharing my thoughts on Some Kind of Wonderful by Giovanna Fletcher — a book I genuinely liked for its charm, emotional honesty, and uplifting message.

If you enjoy stories about rediscovering yourself after heartbreak and learning to embrace new beginnings, this one might just find a place on your reading list.

“This isn't the end, Lizzy. It's the beginning of something new. Don't be scared of new. New can be wonderful.”

Genre: A Journey Through Heartache to Happiness

At its core, Some Kind of Wonderful is a charming contemporary romance, but it's so much more than that. It's a journey of self-discovery, a deep dive into the complexities of love, and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

The Synopsis: A Tale of Love Lost and Found

Giovanna Fletcher delivers a touching, easy-to-relate-to story that follows the journey of Lizzy, a woman learning who she really is after her long-term relationship suddenly ends.

It’s not a dramatic page-turner, but rather a comforting, down-to-earth exploration of growth, friendship, and family — a gentle reminder that even when life doesn’t go to plan, it can still turn out wonderfully.

Lizzy's Journey: Heartache, Healing, and Hope

Lizzy's character is beautifully crafted, resonating deeply with anyone who's ever faced the daunting task of starting over.

Lizzy has been with her boyfriend since their university days — more than seven years of shared memories, dreams, and routines that have shaped nearly every part of her adult life.

To the outside world, they were the perfect couple, and everyone, including Lizzy, assumed that marriage was the next natural step. Her friends would drop hints, her family would ask questions, and seeing her younger sister happily engaged and expecting a baby only added to the pressure simmering beneath the surface.

So when Lizzy and her boyfriend head off on what seems like a romantic getaway, she believes this is the moment.

The candles, the beautiful setting, the kneeling pose — everything points toward a proposal. But instead of hearing the words “Will you marry me?”, Lizzy is blindsided by a heartbreak she never saw coming.

In an instant, her world shatters. It’s not just a breakup — it’s the collapse of everything she thought her future would be.

What follows is a raw and deeply emotional unraveling. Lizzy is heartbroken, lost, and utterly devastated. The vacation that should have marked the start of a new chapter instead becomes a painful ending.

“I wrote the words ‘My better half’. If that’s the case then what am I left with now? The rubbish half? A below par human being who no one will ever want to marry?"

Upon returning home, Lizzy’s world is a blur of confusion and grief. Her family and best friend rally around her, offering love and support.

And yet, even with all their support, Lizzy struggles with a profound question: Who am I without him?

For so long, her identity has been intertwined with someone else’s dreams, preferences, and plans. Now, she must rediscover what she loves, what she wants, and what truly makes her happy.

Piece by piece, she begins to rebuild her confidence, exploring parts of herself she had long forgotten.

Through this process, Lizzy starts to see that sometimes, losing what you thought you wanted can lead you to exactly what you need. Her story is a reminder that heartbreak, as painful as it is, can be the beginning of something beautifully transformative.

It’s a story of finding strength in loss, rediscovering identity, and realizing that when one door closes — sometimes painfully — a window really does open.

A Touch of Realism: The Speed of Recovery

Now, as much as I adored this book, it's only fair to address a small flaw: Lizzy's recovery from her breakup seems somewhat expedited, considering the length and depth of her previous relationship.

It's a narrative choice that may raise eyebrows, but I believe it was a necessary one. By speeding up her recovery, Fletcher avoids dragging the story and instead keeps the narrative focused and engaging.

Why You Should Read Some Kind of Wonderful?

Simply put, it’s a beautifully written, emotionally rich story that speaks to the heart of what it means to find oneself after loss. It’s about the beauty of new beginnings and the courage it takes to embrace them.

Some Kind of Wonderful delves into an important truth about relationships — how easy it is to fall into routine and slowly lose parts of yourself along the way.

Lizzy’s story perfectly captures this quiet erosion of identity that can happen when two lives become so intertwined that you forget where one ends and the other begins.

It’s something most of us can relate to, no matter how strong or loving our relationships might be.

What’s especially striking is how Fletcher portrays the tension between personal desires and societal expectations. Lizzy knows, deep down, that her boyfriend has grown distant — that something isn’t right — but she still clings to the hope of a proposal.

Why? Because that’s what everyone expects, isn’t it?

After all, we’ve heard so many stories of women waiting for that “perfect” proposal after years of being together, and sometimes, it happens not out of love, but because of pressure — from family, friends, or even society itself.

“The only direction to go in life is forwards; staying put and pressing pause is simply not an option.”

It’s a powerful reminder that we shouldn’t measure our worth or happiness by timelines or milestones that society sets for us.

Instead, it encourages women (and readers in general) to give themselves permission to grow, to pause, and to redefine what happiness means on their own terms.

In a world obsessed with ticking boxes — engagement, marriage, babies, career — Some Kind of Wonderful invites us to slow down and rediscover who we are when the noise fades away.

Final Thoughts: A Journey Worth Embarking On

If you’re looking for something heartfelt and comforting, this is the perfect book to curl up with on a cozy weekend.

It’ll make you think, smile, and maybe even reflect on your own relationships and the expectations that come with them.

Happy reading, and until next time, keep turning those pages!
